Years ago, in a small town in New England, there was a pottery store at the end of the season, the last day, and every parent came running in to collect their child’s pottery. Most of the staff had gone back to higher education; back to college. So, rather than offering freebies and apologies, the manager posted a sign on the front door and took a different approach. It said, “Most of our staff has headed off for higher education. We’re the stupid ones, please be patient.” That approach broke the ice and made everybody laugh a little.
