give it away

Posted by Pastor John Lewis on

We are in the midst of our stewardship season here at our church so I thought I would pass on to you a couple of stories to brighten up your day and to challenge you at the same time.

Awhile back at a county fair, a muscle man was showing off his strength and as a final trick he squeezed the juice from a lemon between his hands and then offered $1,000.00 to anyone who could squeeze a single drop out of it. Several husky men tried, but failed. Finally, a small man in a suit with a thin frame, bifocals and a bow tie came forward. He took the lemon in hand, and to the delight of the audience, managed to squeeze one more drop from the lemon. As the strong man paid out the $1,000.00, he asked the man, "What is the secret of your strength? The man replied, "I am the treasurer of the Presbyterian church."

For months, the residents in our small Midwestern town endured the clouds of dirt that swirled about when Main Street was torn up for repair. The arrival of the paving crew, therefore, was a major event. One woman was so glad to see them that she dashed into her kitchen and whipped up a dinner of fried chicken and apple pie to feed the work crew. When she presented the pie to the foreman, he said, "Ma'am, if that were a chocolate pie, we'd have paved your driveway too!" Phyllis laughed. Then she went back into the house and came out with a chocolate pie before heading off to work. When she returned home at the end of the day, the crew was gone and an empty pie plate sat in the middle of a brand new driveway.

I am constantly amazed at what God sends back our way when we share with others. Every time we give, it comes back to us in some way. So let me challenge you to give away kindness and words of encouragement to those you work with and those you live with, and perhaps even to strangers. You never know what might happen.

Luke 6:38  "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Prayer:  Lord, help me to give part of what you have given to me, knowing that you will bless me in the end.
