Living the word

Posted by Pastor John Lewis on

Well, it’s hard to believe summer has come and gone. Labor Day weekend is right in front of us. There will be cookouts, pools will be closing, school buses will once again slow us down a little, and football is in the air.

Labor Day was created to celebrate the achievements of American workers. As believers in Jesus Christ, the way we perform our jobs can have long lasting affects on those around us. Our attitude and work ethic can cause people to be open to an invitation to church or not. If others see us walk the walk, they are more willing to accept an invitation when we invite them to church. People are watching us long before we ever realize it. So what do we do? As believers of Jesus Christ, it is important to do our work and do it well. Often times, it’s the little things that make the most difference: arriving on time, doing our jobs without complaining, going out of our way to help others when we can.

Let me tell you about Royce Jones. Royce use to work at a college in Lexington, Virginia, The Virginia Military Institute (VMI). If there ever was a gentleman, it was Royce Jones. But Royce would be the first to tell you that he was a Christian first, who worked for VMI second. Everyone wanted to work for Royce. He was a quiet, godly man. He never preached, he never carried his bible to a meeting, but his witness was his life. In fact, his life was the best sermon he ever preached. Sadly, Royce died unexpectedly while still on staff at VMI. I have been to a lot of funerals in my life and his was one of largest I have ever attended. During his funeral, one person after another stood up and told about Royce’s kindness, respect for others, his quiet faith and his willingness to go out of his way to help someone in need. There were a lot of people who spoke that day. A number of them said, “Folks, I have never been inside a church in my entire life, but Royce Jones' life was the greatest sermon I ever heard.”

“Back to Church Sunday” is September 21st. 9:00 am & 11:00 am Front Street Sanctuary

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:12 "Live such good lives among non believers that… they may see your good deeds and glorify God….”

Prayer: Lord, whatever I do, help me to do it as if I am doing it for you. Amen.
