My Cousin Vinnie
Have you ever noticed how life doesn't always go the way you want? Perhaps things in your life right now are not the way you would want them? This Thanksgiving, let me encourage you to make the best of your situation. Make the best of whatever disappointment is going on in your life. In some circumstances, not everyone will be able to gather together. Some of our loved ones have gone on to be with the Lord. Some of them for other reasons will not be able to travel and join us. But we will have to make the best of those situations.
Years ago, there was an elderly gentleman who lived alone in the country. He wanted to dig his potato garden so that he could have mashed potatoes as part of his family's Thanksgiving dinner, but it was very hard work as the ground was hard. His only son Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.
Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my potato garden this
year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here, my
troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me.
Love, Dad
A few days later he received a letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Don't dig up that garden. That's where I buried the bodies.
Love, Vinnie
At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. Several days later the old man received another letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Go ahead and plant the potatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love you, Vinnie
Whatever your situation or disappointment this Thanksgiving, ask God to help you make the best of it. You will enjoy Thanksgiving a lot more if you do.
