your 5 hours

Posted by Pastor John Lewis on

They say that where you invest your time reveals what is most important to you. There are 168 golden hours in each week. The average person will spend about 56 of those hours sleeping, about 24 of those hours in eating and personal hygiene, and about 50 of those hours working or traveling to work.  That means there are only about 35 hours a week of “discretionary” time left over. That’s about 5 hours per day. My question is, where are you spending  your 5  hours? If I were to follow you around and observe you for those 5 hours, after about 10 days I could tell you what is most important in your life.  Years ago, there was a wonderful  young boy who grew up across the street from us here in Hamilton.  His name was Ben. Ben Flick!  Just a year ago, Ben was 18 years old and  having lunch with his grandmother at Bob Evans.  The waitress came to their table to take their order and as she approached them she suddenly sneezed. Ben said to her, “God bless you!” The waitress replied, “I will take the 'Bless you' part,  but I don’t believe in God.” Ben asked, “Why not?” The waitress said, "I don’t believe in things I can't see and since I can't see God, I don’t believe in God.” Ben stopped for a moment and said to the waitress, “Do you see that tree outside that window?” The waitress said, “Yes.”  He then  said, "Do you see those leaves on that tree moving back and forth?” She said, “Yes?” Ben said, “Do you see the wind blowing those leaves?” She replied, “No!” Ben said, “But you do believe that it’s there?” She responded “Yes.” Then, Ben said, "You believe in wind even though you can’t see it. However, it’s still there and it’s still real.  Just like the wind that is real and is right there, God is real and God is right here, even though we can’t see God. Ben went on to say, “I want to encourage you to believe in God.  Believe that God  is all around you and most importantly, believe that God loves you.” The young woman smiled and said, “I’ve never thought of it that way.  I think maybe you are right.”  Ben made a huge difference in this woman’s life.  It grieves me to tell you that Ben was tragically killed in a car accident just a few hours after this. How are you spending your 5 hours?  I know how Ben spent his!

Scripture: Psalm 90:12Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should.

Prayer: Lord, give me the ability to spend each hour  wisely. Amen
